Lesson #1:
This story is an amazingly pertinent story full of biblical application for all of us who incline to be "Type A" personalities. However, notice that Jesus is rebuking Martha concerning the way she is doing ministry. So, though this passage applies very pertinently to most of us, we who are involved in ministry should pay extra careful attention to the meaning of these words of Jesus and the good "choices" (v.42) that Mary is making. Are you a minister/pastor? Deacon? Elder? Teacher/professor? Evangelist? Sunday school teacher? Seminary student? If so, let me ask you this question: as you are in the process of ministering your duties on a day to day basis are you more like Martha or Mary? Do you go about your daily ministerial duties ruled by anxiety, fretting, aggitation, and in a tumult over all the things that need to be done? Or, are you more like Mary whose heart is at rest because her heart is in the gospel (Romans 14;17, Matthew 11;28-30)? In other words, as you teach others about how to "walk in the Spirit" are you walking in the flesh/sinful nature? If the answer is "Yes, I am more like Martha than Mary" take a moment to consider the seriousness of your ministering the gospel to others while at the same time failing to live out that gospel in your own heart. Do you need to reconcile with God? Do you need to reconcile with others because of the way you have carried out your duties in a sinful way?
