"Martha, Martha...." Part 6

We have seen how Martha was "ministry/performance driven" instead of "gospel driven" as she was attempting to serve a good, home cooked meal for Jesus. Though commended for doing ministry, Jesus kindly rebukes her for the hearts disposition in which she is doing that ministry (hospitality) and for the fruit which such a heart produces. Let's look at Martha's fruit more closely and then compare it to our own...
First, Jesus says to Martha that she is "worried about many things" (Luke 10;41). The Greek word that Jesus uses is merimnao. This word means to be anxious, worried, distracted, and to be drawn in many directions. Surely this describes Martha as she is drawn/distracted by the "many things" (v.40, 41) that had to be accomplished as she goes about meal preparation.
But this could easily describe all of us as we go about our "many" busy, ministerial duties. Preparing sermons, preparing Sundays bulletin, preparing Sunday School lessons, preparing Wednesday night prayer meeting, preparing for Elder Board meetings, all the while doing phone calls/text messages from home, emails from many different directions, etc. Surely, we all know what it's like to be Martha being very busy with the "many things" ministry entails. However, Martha is not being rebuked because she is doing many activities, but rather for her ministry-driveness that comes from a heart of unbelief and unsubmisiveness. Also, Mary is not commended for sitting and doing nothing but rather for her faith  in Christ (gospel centered). As such, she is inwardly at rest because she is submitting to Christ's authority ("sitting at His feet").
Pastor, consider the disposition of YOUR heart as you go about your many duties! If you would describe yourself as being more like Martha ("worried about many things," torn in many directions) and not Mary then you should deeply consider repenting of doing ministry in your own strength (faith in self) and ministering outside the gospel and it's power. BE CAREFUL HERE! If you are a "performance driven" pastor then you may find accomplishment in your ministerial duties yet all the while spiritually your fruitfulness "choked by life's worries" (Luke 8;14).
Next, Martha is "upset" about many things.....
