To be "full of the Holy Spirit" and "full of God's grace and power" as Stephen was (Acts 7;55, 6;8) is to have ones heart governed, ruled and controlled by Christ and the good news ("gospel"). Here is an important truth for you to keep in mind:
You are always "filled" (controlled, governed, ruled) with something or by something. Or, in other words, your heart is a machine that is constantly running and always being governed and ruled by something. Ultimately, your heart will always be choosing to be governed by the gospel or by some false gospel, by Christ or by some false Christ, by Christ or by an idol.
The important question then becomes not: when will my heart be governed/ruled? But rather: what will I choose for my heart to be filled/governed by as I go through my day? This is very important. We Christians would all acknowledge that we are to be filled with the gospel as we gather every Sunday to worship in our local churches. There we hear the gospel, are filled with and delight in it's good news, and respond with worship, song, praise, adoration, and prayers.
However, what are you filled with as you get in the car after church? As you go through your Sunday routines? As you have to deal with unruly children? As you prepare the week day meals for your families (Martha!)? As you shower in the morning and then head off to work? As you have to deal with traffic and traffic jams? As you deal with difficult bosses, or difficult employees, or both? As you travel home and deal with a wife/husband who is filled with some other gospel and who are (to some degree) out of control? When your cutting the lawn? Changing a diaper? Arguing with your spouse? Making love with your spouse? Paying your bills? Listening to the news? Viewing pornography on the Internet? About to be stoned for being a Christian (Stephen!)? Riding your bike? Having crashed and broken a collar bone while biking?
At all times (as well as those mentioned above) your heart is constantly and deeply filled/governed/controlled by either Christ and His gospel, or some false gospel.
Today, what were you were filled/governed by??
Were you governed by the Gospel today and, therefore, at rest during an easy day (Mary at the feet of Jesus), or even forgiving and compassionate in the context of a horrible day (Stephen being stoned)? Or, were you more like Martha or the religious rulers (angry, agitated, disturbed, going to pieces) because you were filled with a different gospel and different Saviour?
What will you choose to be filled/governed by tomorrow??
