"Luther Quotation": #8
"...the gospel that I preached...I received it by
revelation from Jesus Christ." (1:11, 12)
"When I first took on the
defense of the gospel, I remember a worthy man saying to me, 'I like it, this
doctrine you preach, because it gives glory and everything else to God ALONE,
and NOTHING to man, for we cannot attribute too much glory, goodness, mercy, and
so on to God.' This greatly comforted me and confirmed me. And it is true that
the doctrine of the gospel removes from mankind all glory, wisdom,
righteousness, and so on and gives it SOLELY to the Creator...
my doctrine is
such that it preaches the grace and glory of God ALONE, and in the matter of
salvation it condemns ALL human righteousness and wisdom."
For you to add to the finished and accomplished work of Christ with your own religious effort(s) is to steal from Christ the glory, beauty and majesty that belongs alone to him!
This is the gospel!
