"Luther Quotations": #11
"But when God, who set me apart from birth and
called me by his grace..." (1; 15-17)
Claiming any merit in coming to Christ (or merit for any good effort after receiving Christ) robs Christ of His merit!!
Here Luther writes of the
hideousness of individual merit which always robs Christ of His well deserved glory;
"Our
supposed high merit ...blinds us to the knowledge of grace...(and in so doing we
have) persecuted, blasphemed, trodden underfoot, and condemned God, Christ, the
gospel, faith, the true worship of God...and the more holy (MERITORIOUS) we
were, the more we were blinded (TO THE GOSPEL AND BEAUTY OF
CHRIST)..."
Take the smallest amount of any credit (merit) for your
justification before God and you devilishly rob Christ of his beauty and glory.
This is the gospel!
